Fair Game: Maximizing The Job Fair Experience

With unemployment rising, job fair attendance keeps climbing. Job seekers attend fairs hoping to gain face-to-face access to prospective employers in ways that their e-mailed resumés cannot. The big problem is that too many people attend job fairs, career expos, whatever you want to call them, without a plan. They stumble blindly around, talking to a few participants, and even ignore booths with little or no traffic. That’s like snubbing an interview. If you make the effort to attend, work the room!

Nancy Bauman

When Nancy Bauman’s oldest daughter was a senior at Kennedy High School in Bellmore in 2007, tragedy struck the community when two local high school students were killed in a horrific car accident. Nancy’s phone rang constantly with people calling to discuss the devastating news. But when her daughter called her crying about the accident, her heart just broke. “I had no idea who the boys were,” Nancy says, “but it struck a nerve.”

Sushi Restaurant Waits For A Sign

Who can blame Alex Yeh, chef/owner of Blue Fin in Great Neck, for not springing for a real sign? After all, the location just may be jinxed—Oyama and Saku, two other Japanese ventures, went down faster than a slice of yellowtail, in this same room. Blue Fin has been open about a year or so and Yeh, who was a sushi chef at Nobu, has a vinyl banner draped over the old sign out front. Great Neck is overrun with Japanese restaurants, some just straight sushi bars and some going the pan-Asian/fusion route. Former Nobu chefs have been involved with more than a few of them. It doesn’t help matters that the spot inhabits a quiet stretch of Middle Neck Road and the dark storefront makes the place look perennially closed.

The Pussification of America

OK, ladies, which way do you want it? Give us a clue, because it has gotten confusing. This column is sure to make me some enemies on the female side of the readership equation and beyond. I can think of several right off the bat who I know will take me to task, but whatever. It’s my column. Let me take a breath before I begin.

Harder To Earn Holiday Cash This Year

As a young college student I picked up work between Halloween and New Year’s. It was a great way to earn spare cash, take advantage of retail employee discounts and help with holiday gift giving. Last year, according to the National Retail Federation, employers added 618,000 people to their holiday headcounts—but this year, job seekers won’t find earning opportunities so easy to come by.

You Say Goodbye And I Say Hello

Dozens of BBQ joints have opened in the last three years on LI. Some have been smokin’ and some have quickly flamed out. Was it too much too soon, or just survival of the fittest? Here are a few of the newest to try their hand.
