OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) — A 15-month-old girl whose parents belong to a congregation that shuns doctors appeared to be malnourished after her death from pneumonia, a medical examiner testified Tuesday in the manslaughter trial of her parents.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson was so distraught over persistent insomnia in recent months that he pleaded for a powerful sedative despite warnings it could be harmful, says a nutritionist who was working with the singer as he prepared his comeback bid. Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse whose specialty includes nutritional counseling, said Tuesday that she repeatedly rejected his demands for the drug, Diprivan, which is given intravenously. But a frantic phone call she received from Jackson four days before his death made her fear that he somehow obtained Diprivan or another drug to induce sleep, Lee said
Hempstead Gang Member Convicted in Murder Trial
A Nassau County jury convicted on Tuesday a Hempstead gang member of murdering a teenager in a case of mistaken identity at a Westbury nightclub last year. Dwayne Dailey, 23, was on trial for murdering 17-year-old Edwin Mejia Alvarado as he sat in a car with three friends behind La Boom, inside Don Juan Mexican Restaurant on Old Country Road, when he mistook Alvarado for a rival gangster. Suozzi Continues to Press Albany for Cigarette Tax
A frustrated Tom Suozzi again discussed the challenges Nassau County faces in attempts to have the New York State Senate pass cigarette tax legislation that he said is needed to help plug a budget gap. Suozzi attributed the lack of progress to struggles that exist in the “broken dysfunctional system” in Albany.
Results of Bad Boating Crackdown in Suffolk Released
Marine Bureau officers with Suffolk police along with the U.S. Coast Guard and marine units from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and other local police agencies, reported Tuesday the results of a crackdown on unsafe boating during the weekend. Authorities inspected 408 recreational vessels, cited 121 violations and terminated 31 voyages due to unsafe operation, police said. The initiative, dubbed Operation SAVE (Suffolk Aggressive Vessel Enforcement), lasted from June 26 to June 28 and was the second such effort of the boating season.
