Billy Mays, best known for his catchphrase, “Billy Mays here!” and lending his voice to product campaigns for OxiClean, Mighty Putty and numerous other As Seen On TV products was found dead Sunday morning by his wife in their Tampa home. Mays, 50, was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.
“Although Billy lived a public life, we don’t anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days,” Deborah Mays said in a statement. “Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times.”
Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia on Saturday which had a rough landing when the front tire blew out during touch down.
“All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit,” Mays told FOX 13 in Tampa. “All the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner, after completing an autopsy on Mays, said Monday that there was no connection between Billy’s death and the rough landing and that Mays most likely died from complications due to heart disease. An official cause of death will be announced once all test results are in.
Laura McElroy, spokesperson for the Tampa Police Department, discussed the death of Mays at a press conference on Sunday:
