Senate to hold hearing on college football’s BCS
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate plans to hold a hearing next week looking into antitrust issues surrounding the Bowl Championship Series. It’s the second time this year that Congress is shining a light on the polarizing system college football uses to crown its national champion. The hearing will be held next Tuesday in the Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights, according to a posting on the committee’s Web site.
Cuban, Mavs in hot pursuit of keeping Kidd
DALLAS (AP) — Mark Cuban wants to be first in line to talk to Jason Kidd. Cuban posted Tuesday on Twitter, “Getting ready to fly up to NYC for Free Agent meeting at 12:01,” and that free agent is Kidd, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because NBA rules prevent commenting on such things
Rangers trade Gomez to Canadiens in 6-player deal
NEW YORK (AP) — Scott Gomez’s brief New York tenure ended Tuesday when the star center was traded by the Rangers to the Montreal Canadiens as part of a six-player deal. The key player coming back to New York is forward Chris Higgins, a Long Island native who is set to become a restricted free agent. The deal was announced one day before the NHL’s free-agent shopping season opens Wednesday
Rollins returns to Phillies’ lineup
ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Rollins is back in Philadelphia’s lineup after sitting out four straight games. Rollins, hitting .211 after an 0-for-19 slump, returned as the Phillies’ shortstop and leadoff hitter for Tuesday night’s game against Atlanta. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he hopes Rollins will “play the way he always has, like he has fun.” Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar missed his fourth straight start with a sore right hip.
Source: North Korean ship now going the other way
WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says a North Korean ship has turned around and is headed back the way it came, after being tracked for days by American vessels on suspicion it was carrying illicit weapons. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence, says it is unclear whether the Kang Nam is going back to its home port in North Korea or diverting elsewhere.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Jackson claimed to have a net worth of $236 million as of March 31, 2007, according to financial documents obtained by The Associated Press that shed light on the late pop star’s murky finances and prodigious borrowing. The documents offer the clearest account yet on the state of Jackson’s financial empire, which is expected to become the focus of a legal battle between the singer’s family and creditors. Jackson had $567.6 million in assets, including his Neverland Ranch, his share of the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog that includes the rights to songs by the Beatles, and an assortment of cars, antiques and collectibles, according to a statement of financial condition prepared by Washington-based accounting firm Thompson, Cobb, Bazilio & Associates.
