2 Arrested After 3 Dogs Found in Squalor in Selden

A man and woman are under arrest after authorities found three dogs living in squalid conditions at the couple’s Selden home.

Agents from the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCSPCA) went to the South Evergreen Drive home on July 20.

They obtained a search warrant and found three dehydrated dogs living in filth — a husky, a Lab and a pit-bull mix. Authorities said the house was covered with rubbish and the dogs had protruding bones, open sores and urine-soaked fur. The agents had to enter through the back door because there was so much debris inside, SCSPCA officials said.

On Saturday, detectives from the SPCA arrested 46-year-old Barbara Scharf and 49-year-old Danny Nelson on multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Nelson’s and Scharf’s phone number was unlisted. Anyone with additional information is asked to call the SCSPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
