LA fashion designer gets 59 years to life sentence
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander was sentenced Monday to 59 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting aspiring models he lured to Los Angeles. Alexander, 35, showed no reaction as Superior Court Judge David Wesley said Alexander should be incarcerated as long as possible for preying upon young girls and women.
Deadly wildfire surges closer to Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A deadly wildfire destroyed more than four dozen homes as it blackened a wide swath of tinder-dry Southern California forest, forced thousands of residents to flee and burned dangerously close Monday to a vital mountaintop broadcasting complex. Fire crews battling the blaze in the Angeles National Forest tried desperately to beat back the flames and prayed for weather conditions to ease.
Sen. Grassley: No public option in health reform
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley said Monday he remains hopeful a limited health care reform measure can be negotiated, but that a small bipartisan group of senators working on the issue agrees a government-run public option won’t be part of the package.
Rate of past due auto loans rises in 2nd quarter
NEW YORK (AP) — The rate at which people were late making auto loan payments rose in the second quarter as consumers struggled amid rising job losses. For the quarter ended in June, the national rate of auto loans that were 60 days past due was up 7.35 percent, according to credit reporting agency TransUnion. While still a relatively low 0.73 percent, the rate rose from 0.68 percent at the same time a year ago.
Dbacks beat Dodgers 5-3 in 10 innings
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rusty Ryal homered to lead off the 10th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 Monday night for their fifth consecutive victory. The biggest news during the game occurred off the field, with the Dodgers acquiring first baseman Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jon Garland from Arizona in separate trades announced late in the game.
Blink 182 cancels NY show after DJ AM’s death
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Pop-punk band Blink-182 has pulled out of its show in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., saying band members were grieving the death of their friend, celebrity disc jockey Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein. A statement released by the band said Weezer, Taking Back Sunday, Chester French and “some special surprises” would go on as scheduled at the Monday night show.
