The Town of Islip could double its height limit for commercial windmills.
The town will hold a public hearing on Sept. 15. The proposal would allow 156-foot turbines on industrial and commercial properties. Energy experts say the current height limit — 70 feet — cannot generate enough power to make the turbines cost effective.
Islip also lets homeowners put turbines up to 45 feet tall in their yards. Other Long Island towns allow wind turbines, but only on larger properties like farms and wineries.
