A man was arrested on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton for brandishing a knife at his niece and firing a shotgun at a security guard on Monday, New York State police said.

Albert Marshall, Jr., 37, was intoxicated and while arguing with his niece, Nicole B. Johnson, 23, menaced her with a pocketknife while she was driving him home from a friend’s house at 7:20 p.m., police said. Once she dropped off her uncle she called police and upon arrival, Troopers heard gunshots.

Prior to police arrival, Shinnecock Tribal Security had responded to Marshall’s home, and he became more irate, he told the security guard, Clay Carle, 46, to leave. He then fired the two shots into the air and fired an additional round into the pavement and toward the security vehicle, police said.

Carle, who was still in his vehicle with his left arm out of the window, was struck in his left ring finger by flying debris from the shot but refused medical attention.

As the Troopers got closer to Marshall’s house, they set up a perimeter and moments later he was spotted walking with a shotgun, police said. He put down the gun when police ordered him to and was then arrested.

Marshall was charged with menacing, assault, reckless endangerment, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
