Phils top Mets 9-7 after unassisted triple play

NEW YORK (AP) — Second baseman Eric Bruntlett turned an unassisted triple play to end the Philadelphia Phillies’ 9-7 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.

It was the 15th unassisted triple play in major league history – and the third that ended a game. The first two came more than 80 years ago, by Pittsburgh shortstop Glenn Wright in 1925 and Detroit first baseman Johnny Neun in 1927.

Bruntlett’s rare feat preserved a win for Pedro Martinez in his return to New York and squashed a Mets rally against closer Brad Lidge.
