Southampton Officer Killed in NC Jet Ski Crash


A boating crash North Carolina claimed the life of a police officer from the East End on Saturday.

Southampton Town Police reported Sunday that Officer Michael Nemes was killed in a Jet Ski accident while on vacation with his family. He was riding the Jet Ski in Brown’s Inlet in Onslow County when he was involved in an accident and wound up in the water unconscious. The exact cause of his death is still being investigated by the enforcement division of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, in conjunction with the Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.

The 37-year-old was a five-year veteran of the department who started his career as a New York City Police Officer in the 90th Precinct–Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Nemes was currently assigned to the Community Response Unit and Emergency Services Unit. police-150x150

Nemes leaves behind his pregnant wife and 2-year-old daughter. They are expecting their second child in October. Details regarding services for Police Officer Nemes have not yet been completed, police said.

“Police Officer Nemes was truly a great man, an excellent officer and a true friend,” police said in a statement. “He will be missed.”

    God Bless his family, may he rest in peace. Michael is a 1989 graduate of Rocky Point JR SR High School. We all will mourn his loss.
