State GOP Leader Mondello Stepping Aside

Will not seek new term as NYS chair, will remain leader of Nassau County GOP

By Michael M. Martino, Jr. on Aug 24th, 2009

Mondello_FeatNew York State GOP sources are saying that Joe Mondello, who lead the once mighty Nassau County Republican Committee, will not seek a new term as the chairman of the New York State Republican Party.

Upstate Republican Ed Cox, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon, gained solid support last week from 24 Republicans. Mondello is expected to remain as the Nassau County leader.

The last decade or so has been tough for the stalwart chairman, who still wields considerable political clout despite having seen his GOP voter base be decimated by the rise of the current Democratic Party in Nassau County.

Last month, the Nassau County Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs was named the top Dem in New York.

It looked like a three-person battle for the GOP post this fall, until Mondello announced this week that he would not seek another term.

Cox, Manhattan-based attorney, is considered the front runner to  Niagara County GOP chairman Henry Wojtaszek, who sources say will begin his push for the position this week.
