A man was arrested Monday for attacking a 64-year-old woman during a home invasion burglary in Manhasset last week, Nassau police said.
Keith Land, 43, a handyman who lives around the block from the victim, broke into the woman’s Cherry Brook Place home, snuck into her bedroom while she slept, stole her cash and bank card and then bludgeoned her twice when she woke up during the early morning hours of Aug. 23, according to 6th Squad detectives. Sixth Precinct officers had found the victim, a retired civilian supervisor for the New York City Police Department, in her home suffering from severe head injuries. She was taken to North Shore University Hospital and she was admitted in critical condition where she remains in a coma.
“He had a friendly relationship with the victim,” said Detective Sgt. Steven Zeft, noting that Land was hired by the victim to do work around the house and sometimes cooked dinner for him. That relationship may be the reason Land was the one who called 911 after the assault. Although the motive for the crime remains unclear, it is not the first time Land has been in trouble with the law.

State prison records indicate he has served time since the 1980s on various convictions, including burglary, robbery and assault. He has been out since 2002, police said. And while Land faces 25 years in prison for these latest charges, which include attempted murder, burglary, robbery and assault, the victim’s future is uncertain.
“Whether or not she will be the same person, only time will tell,” said Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone, a Nassau police spokesman.
Land will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Tuesday.
