[...] Lori continues to make huge strides in her own quest for fluency. “Four years ago I still had a very big fear of public speaking,” Lori remembers. She went to a conference hosted by the NSA and met 400 other stutterers. “It blew my mind,” Lori says. “I was a nervous wreck, but I spoke on the microphone for the first time in my life.” Then she smiles and adds, “I loved it.” Read the entire article.
What a wonderful and well-deserved article written on Lori! My family is eternally grateful for her support, patience, and commitment to working with our daughter, Lila. She started stuttering when she was 4 and 1/2 and became pretty severe at one point. Lori guided and taught us how to apply the Lidcombe Method at our sessions and, more importantly, in everyday life. Quite frankly, it was miraculous but only with Lori's knowledge of the method and devotion to the child overcoming this obstacle. Less than a year later, Lila began kindergarten and the teachers and speech therapist could not believe that Lila had speech services for stuttering!

I truly do not know what we would've done without Lori. My husband and I have the utmost respect for her and her work. Congratulations to Lori for this awesome recognition!!!

I am glad that Lori is speaking up and speaking out. Stuttering can defeat us or transform us. When we share ourselves with the world, we make the world better. Kudos to you!

Lori is a wonderful speech therapist. She used the Lidcombe method with my 3 1/2 -year old son, and it was incredibly successful. He progressed very quickly and was almost completely fluent by 10 months after beginning the program. At this point (he's now 5 1/2) he's improved so much, no one can believe that he actually required speech therapy for stuttering. Thanks Lori, for being there for my son and I.

Hi Joseph-
Thanks for your comment.s The NSA has been terrific in terms of support and I have to tip my hat to the SLPs who taught me the fluency skills that helped me be an effecitve speaker and in turn enabled me to help others. I also have to thank the famiies and all people who stutter who open up their lives to me and let me in. They have taught me so much as well. Let's not forget the Stuttering Foundation of America (www.stutteringhelp.org) and Jane Fraser for all the education they have provided the stuttering community.

Lori, your story sounds like mine and I know many others that stutter.
Thank you for sharing and being our super women! We do need more
of you. I know sharing your story with the public WILL encourage others.
I've heard some NSA members say "stutter on!"
And thank you Beverly for this story.

I was lucky to have Lori work with my son.
He speaks well now because she is truly a remarkable speech therapist.
I would recommended her highly to everyone.

Lori,
Thank you for sharing this personal success experience. I was introduced to your story by your Aunt Roz.
My nephew had a severe case of stuttering and he has been helped by NSA, an organization of which I support financially as well as referrals. I relate to the difficulties you have experienced via my nephew's struggles. Your story brought tears to my eyes, especially as you spoke into lthe microphone for the first time.
Thank you!

Lori, thank you for sharing your story. It is only when we let light shine on the subject, that stuttering can be put in perspective. A person who stutters once told me that "stuttering only defeats us when it silences us". Clearly, you have not allowed your stuttering to silence you! Your commitment to people who stutter and to their families serves as an example for us all. Keep doing that important work...

It's so important for children who stutter to learn about success stories such as your own! You are an inspiration to children who stutter and to their parents. In addition, you are modeling how we can all do something to educate the general public about stuttering.Congratulations and best of luck with your work. :)

I worked with a guy who had a stutter - he said he had one but never stuttered. In fact, he was a trainer for a living, speaking to groups. One day he told me that he had a terrible stutter since childhood and that a teacher made him act in a school play. When he protested about his stutter, the teacher said "Joe, this is acting, act like you don't have a stutter"

Joe finished the story telling me he's been acting like he doesn't have a stutter ever since then.

Best,
David Portney
