Lauren Hanley, 68, a nun at St. Frances de Chantal Church, was on her way home and making a left onto Hawthorne Lane when she crashed the Toyota Corolla, police said. Her eyes were blood shot, her speech was slurred and she had alcohol on her breath, police said. In the car, which is owned by the church, they also found a plastic bottle that contained what police believe to be alcohol, according to investigators.
She was charged driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving an uninspected vehicle. The second DWI charge is because her blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit of .08.
According to court records, she told authorities she had been drinking at the church since 3 p.m. that day. She was released into her own custody and is due back in court Friday.
Hanley could not be reached for comment. The Rockville Centre Diocese issued a statement saying, “we pray that the Lord gives her strength to endure this difficult time.”
