Theresa Barth, 32, a former mortgage broker, was arrested at her place of business, the Diversity: Employment Agency, on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, which has a second location in Queens. Both offices offered Barth the opportunity to access large numbers of clients’ personal information, police said.
Update: Barth sentenced to one year in jail
Identity Theft Unit detectives started investigating Barth after they received a complaint from a victim, who reported that a credit card had been obtained in her name without authorization. Barth was found to be involved in that case and several other scams, including the forgery of checks, police said.
Detectives later executed a search warrant at Barth’s home and office where they found a large amount of personal information that Barth had access to, police said. Investigators are concerned that there are other victims on Long Island and nationwide.
Barth was charged with identity theft, two counts of grand larceny and two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. She will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.
