Officials: NY men being watched in terrorism probe

NEW YORK (AP) — A “handful” of men in New York are possible associates of the chief suspect in a suspected plot to use homemade bombs to attack New York City commuter trains, and investigators have them under heavy surveillance, law enforcement officials said Wednesday. Investigators are still hunting for additional players and expect to make more arrests than just the chief suspect, 24-year-old Denver airport shuttle driver Najibullah Zazi, according to an official who declined to discuss when that might happen or how many people are under scrutiny. Another official added that the men under surveillance are no longer considered a threat because the plot was thoroughly disrupted.



Bank of America CEO Lewis leaving by year’s end

NEW YORK (AP) — Ken Lewis, the embattled CEO of Bank of America Corp., is leaving the company, succumbing to nearly a year of strife that followed his company’s acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co. WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House-backed overhaul of the nation’s health care system weathered repeated challenges from Republican critics over taxes, abortion and more on Wednesday, and the bill’s architect claimed enough votes to push it through the Senate Finance Committee as early as week’s end. “We’re coming to closure,” said Sen. Agency: Michael Vick re-signs with Nike

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Vick is back with Nike more than two years after the company severed ties over the quarterback’s involvement in a dogfighting ring. The managing director of the agency that represents Vick announced the deal Wednesday while participating on a panel at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium. Michael Principe of BEST referred questions to Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, who did not return calls from The Associated Press.



Stocks slip but still have best quarter since 1998

NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market had a fitting end to a stellar but erratic third quarter as investors still ambivalent about the economy shuttled between bouts of buying and selling. Wall Street’s major indexes ended the July-September period with big gains Wednesday as investors placed more bets that the recovery will keep gathering momentum.
