A drunken-driving Manorville man was arrested after his pickup truck rear-ended a police car on the Long Island Expressway, causing the road to be closed for more than three hours on Tuesday  morning, Suffolk police said. sirens2-300x300

Police Officer Robert Diamond of the Motor Carrier Safety Section was escorting four New York State Department of Transportation trucks westbound near exit 63 when a Toyota pickup truck driven by Brian Berky attempted to go around the convoy, but the 41-year-old instead collided with the patrol car at 11:01 a.m., police said.

The pickup truck overturned, ejecting Berky, who landed on the guardrail on the right side of the expressway, police said. Upon arrival, officers noticed the smell of alcohol on Berky’s breath while he was unresponsive at the scene.

Berky and Diamond were taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where Berky was being treated for severe head trauma and lacerations to his abdominal area. Diamond suffered minor bruises and contusions and was treated and released.

Berky was charged with driving while intoxicated, and was issued summonses for not wearing a seatbelt and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. The expressway was re-opened shortly before 3 p.m.

The investigation is continuing, police said.  Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

I was in the traffic jam this fool caused for more than two hours, and I think he should be sued for all the gas wasted. Furthermore, the police did a really crappy job of traffic direction — no warnings not to get on the LIE, and no way to get off once you were on. What if someone had a medical emergency?
