New Hangs To Catch The Game

Three L.I. beer and burger joints for playoffs, the World Series and Sunday afternoons

As the indoor season begins with baseball playoffs, football and everything else, it’s time for pub grub and beer at sports bars. With elbows on the bar, its time to stuff our faces and quench the unquenchable.

Canz Restaurant & Bar

1610 Old Country Rd, Westbury
516-227-CANZ

Everything about this new,  homegrown sports bar says “yes we Canz.” From the beer cans lining the exterior window to the roster of almost 100 different cans of beer available—everything from Bud to Boddingtons. The space that housed a Laguna Grille has been transformed into a roadhouse in a strip mall with a wraparound bar and 14 flat-screens. The requisite license plates and hubcaps dress a barn-siding-covered wall and there’s plenty of tables and stools. Unique offerings among the burgers, sandwiches and salads include Fried Mac ‘n Cheese Dumplings, Jack Daniels BBQ Salmon Sandwich, PB&J Sandwich served with a soft pretzel, Sloppy Joes, Grilled Pinwheel Sausage with broccoli rabe in a tortilla, Greek Lamb Burger, Italian Meatball Burger and, for dessert, Fried Twinkies, Fried Oreos and Belgian Waffles. The front of the joint has a garage door that’s open in agreeable weather and if you drink just the right amount, Lark Tattoo is a few doors down.

Buffalo Wild Wing & Grill Bar

1112 Deer Park Ave, North Babylon
631-242-WING
1986 Middle Country Rd, Centereach
631-737-WING

At the brand new North Babylon branch of this easy-to-do national chain, it’s all about the Buffalo-style chicken wings, with 14 different sauces, plus chicken in various forms on sandwiches, in wraps, in salads and even on flatbread. Typical apps and burgers round out the menu. Wings hit the table in multiples of six. The promised heat delivers to levels described. Mild is very tame, medium will satisfy your quest for a kick and hot, wild and blazin’ takes you up into the burn unit. I counted 47 flat screens, which is great on a Sunday afternoon but overkill at a weekday lunch when there’s nothing on.

Hooters

25 Smith St., Farmingdale
631-249-5250

Opened Sept. 30, this third LI location, like all Hooters, has more to look at than ballgames. But they’re also known for their Nearly Famous Wings and More Than A Mouthful Burgers. I wonder whether they call them “flat-screens” here.
