White Christmas Eve Forecast for Long Island

santasnow

santasnowThose dreaming of a white Christmas on Long Island may see their dreams come true—sort of—despite the slim odds and temperatures recently breaking 70 on the first day of winter.

A cold front is forecast to pass through the area Tuesday, bringing snow showers on Christmas Eve that could become heavy at times, causing the potential for both decreased visibility and dangerously icy roads on a big travel day, according to Upton-based National Weather Service meteorologists.

“Even a quick dusting of snow in combination with temperatures dropping into the 20s… will present the potential for locally hazardous driving conditions for late afternoon and evening travel on Christmas Eve,” the agency said Monday in a statement.

The snow showers are expected to start after 3 p.m. Tuesday and continue into the evening, when temps will drop from the 30s into the 20s, although no notable accumulation is likely.

Christmas day is forecast as sunny with highs near 30 before a slight chance of snow showers return early Thursday morning.

The weather is expected to be sunny in the upper 30s or lower 40s through the weekend.
