A Centereach man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a motorcycle crash that injured his passenger shorty after midnight on Saturday, Suffolk police say.

Steven Schwamb, 19, was driving a Suzuki motorcycle westbound on Jericho Turnpike when he stopped at the light on Old Willets Path in Smithtown but when the light turned green he accelerated his motorcycle and his passenger, Alyssa Bennett, fell off, police said.  According to Schwamb, as Bennett was lying on the roadway, she was struck by an unknown vehicle driving westbound on Jericho Turnpike.

Bennett, 16, of Smithtown, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was treated for a broken leg and possible broken ribs.

Schwamb was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.

It’s the parents that need to be arrested. What is a 19 yr old doing with a motorcycle at all let alone at mightnight. I happen to know the 16 yr old and this is not her first encounter with trouble. It is time for parents to step up and be parents. Saying NO may save their lives. Teens are too stupid to know what is best for them, thats why they have parents.
