This article is a bit condescending. As an adult with a disability I feel like this piece portrays ALL p.w.d's as 100% reliant on their parents, with no ability whatsoever to make decisions for themselves. I do most of my self-care by MYSELF. I am 30 years old and am dying to get my parents off my back ( I love them but their ideas are a tad archaic), so to speak and this article would not be helpful. I love them but it is more than possible to exist without them. We all lose our parents eventually, isn't it important that we learn the skills necessary to live without fear?? I don't need my parents to "advocate" on my behalf for services I am entitled to, best believe that I am loud enough to advocate for myself. I am not in denial, I know that I will always need some help along life's road, but everyone will....I don't stand, err I mean sit, alone in that.
