Written by Long Island Press on Nov 8th, 2009

Suffolk police rescued a canoeist from the Long Island Sound on Sunday afternoon.

A Good Samaritan tried to swim out to save Zura Doletza of Brooklyn, who fell out of his canoe and was clinging to a lobster pot buoy, after the victim was spotted screaming for help 200 yards off Old Field Point at 3:34 p.m. After the would-be rescuer turned back, Marine Bureau officers pulled Doletza from the 60-degree waters.

Doletza was semi-conscious and unable to speak and when he was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. He was deemed to have a severe case of hypothermia.
