Suffolk police are investigating a shooting involving an off-duty New York Police Department officer at a bar in Miller Place early Thursday morning. 
A group of men leaving Napper Tandy’s Pub got into an altercation with another group who were in the parking lot when the officer drew his 9mm service weapon and shot 23-year-old Atiba Watkins of Central Islip once in the torso at approximately 1:05 a.m., according to 6th Squad detectives.
Witnesses said Watkins brandished a knife at the time he was shot and knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

Watkins was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition. The investigation is continuing.

mac….get a grip and read my post. It says if additional facts are presented we can comment on them. Sure there’s bad cops and if Tink got additional info from a reliable source than so be it. So before YOU sound off as well then we’ll all wait for the facts. Right now however this paper reported what it did……..guy pullled a knife and was shot by an off duty cop. So let’s all sit back until they update more info.

Here’s the facts for you: The off duty cop started the fight inside the bar. Was told to leave after punching the guy in the face. The cop then waited in the parking lot for 45 minutes until the victim left. The cop had 4 additional off duty cops with him. The victim has 1 friend. The cop shot the victim in the back and he’s lost a kidney. They are withholding the cops name to protect this ass. He is a rockie with at least 3 points against him. He was taken away in the police car in cuffs. It’s sad no one wants to report the truth and it sucks you can’t trust a New York Police officer

YOU’RE the one who has no facts. How do you know that this off-duty cop wasn’t a powder keg looking to go off? What is it with people like you obviously are, who think that cops are wonderful, warm, fuzzy, hero protectors of the innocent. There are plenty of mentally unbalanced cops out there, who are authoritarian, violent, angry, and aggressive jerks, who are just spoiling for a fight with someone. What about the off-duty cop on the LIRR train a couple of months ago, who pulled his gun, for no real reason, just because a bunch of kids were a little drunk and having a good time a little too loudly? What about the nasty young NYC cop who, for absolutely no reason, attacked and shoved a bicyclist to the ground a few years ago. You can see the video at Youtube. The guy was dismissed from the force for doing that. Face it: cops are too often arrogant, mean-spirited people who hate the human race, and they seem to consider all civilians to be the “enemy”. They don’t really care about people. They just want a guaranteed job with a sweet pension waiting for them after 20 years. And, they’re often racist as hell. I’ve known many, many cops in my lifetime. They’re generally not very pleasant people to be around. Cops have a higher rate of spousal battery, drug abuse, alcoholism, and suicide than the population as a whole. In my opinion, they’re good people to stay away from.

Jon….stop being a pompous ass! I’m commenting on what’s reported not what your opinion is. If additional facts surface, fine. We’ll all have a chance to comment on it. You’re commenting on my post and YOU have no additional facts. Did it occur to you that perhaps the cop properly identified himself and shot to protect himself or others? Where does it say charges are pending against the officer or that the shooting is justified?
On face value as reported, the guy pulls a knife during a fight and SURPRIZE …..a bystander or pehaps a participant is an off duty cop.
Why don’t you spend your time commenting on what the guy was doing carrying a knife into a crowded bar.
And yes i know you’ll pray for me as you do for every other poster on this site. However until we do know more, thank goodness for this cop taking action before the guy

I love a feel good story. Gutless slob gets into a fight and instead of duking it out like a man, pulls a knife and gets shot by an off duty cop. Some stories do have a happy ending
