Reforms After ‘Wrong Grave’ Errors

By Associated Press on Nov 19th, 2009

Reforms are being made after the Town of Hempstead acknowledged three cemetery errors in less than a year that left coffins in the wrong grave sites. CEM46853745_1179866413221

The town said Wednesday that an official at Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale has been suspended and will be reassigned. It said he didn’t notify next of kin before recently having a body moved out of the wrong grave.

Town Supervisor Kate Murray apologized for the mix-ups.

The reforms will include computerized crosschecks. The town also plans to hire a professional with experience in cemetery management.
