Banks, insurance companies, utilities, investment companies and many other businesses are required by State law to surrender inactive accounts to the state. The state comptroller serves as custodian of this money until it is claimed. If a person can prove they are entitled to the money, it will be returned, without charge.
More than 23 million account records remain unclaimed. Those interested in seeing if they have money coming to them can come to the Nassau County Supreme Court building, Central Jury Courtroom at 100 Supreme Court Dr. in Mineola on Nov. 24, at 9:30 a.m.
