I have grown up with Maureen and despite her family situation, she has continuously not been an upstanding citizen. It is horrible about the little girl and no mother should ever have to bury her child but this is not "a horrible incident on a twenty year old girl." Yes, it is life changing to Maureen and will continue to follow her throughout the years but hopefully this little girls death will help Maureen change her life and make something good from it rather than what she has been doing for years and years. My prayers go out to the little girls family.

OMG Bill...how dare you?!?!? You obviously must not have children if you can sit there and blame the poor, tortured mother. Children are impulsive and you are not gripping the hand of an older child with the same fervor in which you are holding a two year old's hand!!! To imply that the mother at fault (especially without knowing the facts) is simply cruel. I hope you never have to suffer the way this woman must be. Speaking of facts, Macgyver...where do you get yours? How exactly do you know for sure that they were not using the crosswalk and crossing against the light? That information was never stated anywhere. Furthermore, even it if was, this dirtbag HIT A CHILD AND DIDN'T STOP!!! The very next day a child was killed nearby, on a bike, on Route 347. In that instance, reports say the child drove into traffic and the man who killed him was not at fault. However, he did the right thing and had the decency to stay. The fact that this loser, this white trash pig, continued on her way with no regard to a little girls life is what makes her a despicable piece of trash. And the fact that she is so young and has such a poor driving record proves that something should have been done to stop her way before now. I hope she rots in jail the rest of life!

So if I understand, Lambert had a suspended license at the time of the accident. She had no business driving *anywhere*. Then pile on "leaving the scene..".

For that reason alone, the Heroin part is actually moot. Maybe she was high, riding the White Horse at the time, maybe not. But her junkie ass had NO right to drive anywhere. So she had at least one reason to flee, probably more.

An unlicensed driver killed my cousin in Houston, TX April 2008 when she ran a red light. Once Harris county changed DA's, the new DA dropped the charge. The unlicensed, uninsured, illegal alien walks away with murder and no record. She is free to borrow a friend's car and kill again. And now ICE won't touch her.

Yes, the family is trying to reach the Harris county DA - he won't return calls.

So Maureen's smirking, illegally-driving, junkie butt is behind bars where it finally belongs. The Smithtown streets are a *little* bit safer, and for that, I will put on a little smile myself.

May God grant poor Courtnet Sipes peaceful rest, and her family the Grace to find forgiveness.

I grew up with maureen, I now live in colorado when I heard this...it is so crazy how life goes...I agree it is disturbing that a little girl is dead because of my friend, but think how life is inside maureens head...its obviously a little cloudy.. So give her a little break, he life is screwed now and she will never be in a positive state of mind. My condolences go out to everyone...the sipes as well as my old friend, Maureen. I hope the person I used to know isn't completely gone.

To Jax:

This is just too sad. I agree with all that you had said.
I can cannot begin to imagine what the parent's of this child are going through right now. Being a mother myself, I feel just awful for this family.
Take care you must be going through something yourself.

Correction to my earlier comment -- the speed limit is 30 miles an hour NOT 40 on Main Street.

macgyver.. maybe they did cross against the light, that doesn' t make it their fault. maybe they were rushing. maybe they were late. maybe the daughter bolted ahead. that's what kids do. maybe. maybe. maybe...it just doesn't matter. the "white trash we speak of" is the girl in that picture smiling. the one giggling as she's being walked in handcuffs. the one with a history of reckless driving. the one who never learned her lesson the first, second, third or fourth time she got in trouble behind the wheel.

Leaving the scene is not what 20 year olds do. it's what people without a conscience do. maybe you panic, maybe you are in shock and you leave---but you come back... that night, not the next morning. unless you have something to hide. unless you were trying not to get caught.

she didn't come back. and she didn't steal a pack a gum. she ran over a child and left her mangled in a pool of blood. and if she wasn't speeding like a lunatic, possibly under the influence, she would have braked, even for a second, she would have honked the horn, she would have swerved. but no she kept going and only turned herself in after "the noose was tightening around my neck."

This 20-year-old has a history of reckless driving and she's had a smile on her face in every picture. kids cross the street, they don't look, but if she was going the speed limit, or even just a little over it, if she was paying attention and braked just a little bit, she would have had time to minimize the impact, not send this little girls body 300 feet to be lodged under a parked car.

This child would have broken bones, and maybe those would be her own fault if she bolted in front of a car. Broken bones. But she wouldn’t’ be dead. The fact that she is dead..that’s all the drivers fault, not the childs, not the mothers …this kid never had a chance.

and THOSE are the facts. not reported by the media. reported by someone who was there.

A young girl was killed. It was not intentional, yet it's horrifc and unimagineable....I pray each day for the Sipes family and hope they can get through this. The girl hit and killed a child unintentionally and should be punished because she left soemone to die....regardless of why, you never leave someone on the street to bleed to death.
It was not parental neglect and the fact that you even suggest that is heineous and ridiculous...give it a rest and pray for all those involved.

Do we know that the woman driving went through the light? That is what I have been trying to find out and I haven't seen any reports that make that claim. Don't get me wrong this is a tragedy for all involved. My son goes to the same school as that poor little girl; however, I am still wondering about the details of the accident and haven't seen anything in writing. My prayers go out to everyone involved it is a horrible tragedy.

I live extremely close to where this accident happened. My whole life. I have seen countless, endless times where people have gone through this light. my own cousin was hit (in a car) of someone going through this light. So a few comments: 1. smithtown police need to be more involved at certain points in smithtown. they are consistently missing from areas where there are constant accidents, speeding, etc. I have seen people go down lawrence avenue at 70 miles an hour. there are crazy drunk driving problems, there are bar fights outside and serious loitering and littering problems abound. there is too much going on around a local elementary school with too little supervision. smithtown police are overpaid and underworked. Period. EVERYONE IN OUR TOWN KNOWS THIS. 2. accidents effect BOTH sides as life changing events. its sad across the board. and 3. I think this poor family and poor little girl deserves the local community to rally around making this a safer place.

Living in this area, I have witnessed reckless driving at its worst, speeding and PASSING in school zones. Waiting at the bus stop, people just rip by us, even though they can clearly see small children waiting on the side of the road. Seriously, are you in that much of a rush that you're willing to hurt or even worse, kill someone? Slow down people and be aware of what's going on around you...

Again, just to close my absolute deepest sympathies to Courtney's family, I could never minimize what they will have to go through in the next few months. I also feel for Maureens family, as they don't know whats in store for there daughter. ANYONE could have hit this girl if she misjudged crossing traffic without supervision, lets hope no one else commenting here has to be in that situation.

I am Absolutely amazed at the opinions I have watched on this case. I am limited as to what I want to say here but, 1st: there was a signal and a crosswalk which neither mother or daughter used. 2nd the daughter alone bolted across a 4 lane main street, in traffic. 3rd the "white trash" you spoke of was LEGALLY proceeding with traffic. Believe me I have a child, and cringe at this tragedy for both families. Her crime was acting like a 20 year old, and leaving the scene, and should be punished for that. And I promise I am not on her side. Get your facts PLEASE, b/c news only reports what it wants.

I am Absolutely amazed at the opinions I have watched on this case. I am limited as to what I want to say here but, 1st: there was a signal and a crosswalk which neither mother or daughter used. 2nd the daughter alone bolted across a 4 lane main street, in traffic. 3rd the “white trash” you spoke of was LEGALLY proceeding with traffic. Believe me I have a child, and cringe at this tragedy for both families. Her crime was acting like a 20 year old, and leaving the scene, and should be punished for that. And I promise I am not on her side. Get your facts PLEASE, b/c news only reports what it wants.

It is time to get the Suffolk Cops out of the fire houses and Dunkin Donuts and make them write speeding tickets. People are driving too fast on long island and it is time it stops...

Courtney was with her mother while crossing the street. Her mother saw the whole thing...( i cannot even imagine) They were either getting her brother from the music store from a lesson or Courtney was going to a music lesson.
There is another article about this loser that states she has a record of driving reckless and even had her license suspended at one time. I think she is an absolute PIG for driving the way she does especially on a road where people cross street. Looks like a case of careless white trash ..... they should throw her in jail for a long..long time!! I wonder how fast she was going since it is a 40 mile an hour speed limit.

Deepest sympathy to Courtney's family.

Where was the 11 years old mother at the time the child was hit ?
Is there parental neglect involved?
Would the child be alive if the mother was watching the child?

how can someone hit a person and not stop? i dont know why alcohol or drugs is not a suspicion at this time...i can think of no other reason why someone would flee the scene after hitting someone if they were not doing something wrong and afraid of getting in trouble. if this girl didnt turn herself in until a day later then how can police be so sure alcohol was not involved? if you hit someone while driving and it was purely an accident why wouldnt you stop? if you werent doing anything wrong then you would be cleared of any charges. if you werent doing anything wrong you would also show concern for the victim and try to get help instead of making yourself a criminal by fleeing the scene. i really would like to know why the police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. it does not make any sense to me. what a horrible thing to happen to this child and her family. if she were my child i would DEMAND to know why the cops do not think this Lambert girl was under the influence.

Why does the school have anything to say on the matter? Any statements should be for the family not the public.

In Newsday's article, she is leaving the fourth precinct with a smile on her face. But, I don't know if Newsday has the correct caption?

Please tell me why she would be smiling??
