AP sources: Suicide bomber was invited on base

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the suicide bomber who killed seven CIA employees at a remote outpost in southeastern Afghanistan had been invited onto the base and was not searched. A former senior intelligence official says the man was being courted as an informant and that it was the first time he had been brought inside the camp. The official says a senior and experienced CIA debriefer came from Kabul for the meeting, suggesting that the purpose of the meeting was to gain intelligence.



Washington Times slashes staff; sports section out

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Times slashed its staff by more than 40 percent and will eliminate its sports section and most local coverage in 2010, shifting its focus to politics, business and investigative reporting. The 27-year-old newspaper announced the latest round of layoffs in its Thursday edition and said the last sports section would appear Friday.

Obama family goes to the movies to see ‘Avatar’

KANEOHE, Hawaii (AP) — President Barack Obama’s family is spending part of the last day of 2009 watching the futuristic adventure film “Avatar.” The Obamas visited a movie theater near their rented vacation home in Hawaii on Thursday morning for a screening of the 3-D hit. Officials say the first family and their friends had the theater to themselves to watch director James Cameron’s tech-heavy film. The Obamas, including first daughters Sasha and Malia, left their compound before noon on New Year’s Eve



Cubs agree with Marlon Byrd on $15M, 3-year deal

CHICAGO (AP) — Outfielder Marlon Byrd agreed Thursday to a $15 million, three-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. Byrd hit .283 with 20 homers and 89 RBIs last season for the Texas Rangers. and will likely take over in center from Kosuke Fukudome, who would move to right field full-time after the trade of troubled Milton Bradley to Seattle
