Norman Besemer

A school bus driver was arrested Monday night after allegations surfaced that he taped shut the mouth of a 10-year-old boy while driving him home from school last month, Suffolk police said.

Norman Besemer, 61, of Shirley, was driving students home from Frank P. Long Intermediate School in Bellport, when he placed clear plastic tape over the boy’s mouth on Jan. 15, police said.

The school is part of the South Country Central School District, whose administrators posted a message on the district’s Web site on Friday that said the school is investigating and the bus driver has been fired. The bus is operated by Montauk Bus Service.

Besemer was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 30.
