Teen in Critical Condition After Bay Shore Shooting


A teenager has been hospitalized after being shot on the corner of Illinois Avenue and Nebraska Avenue in Bay Shore Wednesday night, Suffolk County police said.

Joel Nieves, 16, of Bay Shore, was walking home from night classes at Brentwood High School when he was confronted by two or three men, at least one of whom fired shots at Nieves, striking him in the back five times at about 10:37 p.m., police said.

Nieves was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he is listed in critical condition.

The suspects, who were described as Hispanic men wearing dark clothing and possibly hoodies, fled northbound on Illinois Avenue toward Candlewood Road on foot.
