MTA Explores Wireless Internet on LIRR

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is exploring a plan to bring wireless Internet to Grand Central Terminal, Pennsylvania Station and two of New York City’s commuter rail services.

All aboard! The MTA is looking for service providers to bring WiFi to LIRR trains

The agency has invited developers to submit proposals for installing Internet service on Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road trains.

Any companies that bid for the project would have to pay for it themselves. The MTA says it is facing a cash crunch and can’t expand amenities right now.

It is unclear whether that would mean that riders would have to pay to use the service, or whether providers could come up with some other stream of revenue and offer it for free.
