A Freeport teenager charged with crashing a van into a house, killing a woman gardening, told police she didn’t feel so bad after learning the victim’s age.

Kayla Gerdes, 18, was quoted in a written statement to police saying: “The thing that made me feel not so bad was she was old.” The comments were reported by Newsday, citing court records. She added: “I mean, 70 years is a long time to live.”

Gerdes is facing vehicular manslaughter and other charges in the Tuesday crash in Hempstead that killed 69-year-old Rebecca Twine-Wright.
Defense attorney John R. Lewis says his client was devastated when told the woman had been killed. He said Gerdes, who has pleaded not guilty, has an addiction problem.

I don’t think its fair that her comment was taken out of context about the age of the victim. I believe she meant that she was glad it wasnt a young person’s life cut short. I believe she should be punished but she did not go out that day with the intent to kill someone. She made some really BAD choices but she is young and could turn her life around to make up for them.

She made the decision to get behind the wheel under the influence. I feel no pity for her but pity for the family of the woman who was killed. Whos is Kayla to make such a comment about the womans age. There are plenty of “older people” who are still living life to the fullest. I hope that she gets put away and doesnt get out until she is the victims age.
What is wrong with some of your comments. I really dont mean to be rude here, but will the older woman who was killed in this “accident” be given a second chance? NO. I also disagree with you on the fact that you feel it was an accident. This moron decided to get behind the wheel of her car and drive under the influence which means it was pre-mediated. She made the choice to go out and kill someone. I hope she gets life and gets what she deserves. One less waste of life that will be off the streets hopefully.
I feel bad for the Victim and the victims family. The young girl that killed this woman must be devistated. She is young and made a poor decision. Drugs or not it is a sad situation. I dont feel the girl should be put away for life. It was an accident and she was under the influence. She should get help but not put away for life. I was once young and made poor decisions. If this is not her first then she should be given another chance. She will live with this for the rest of her life, trust she will never get over this. I pray for the victim n her family and i also pray for the young girl who is fighting for her freedom n also suffering with what she has done.
kayla would never in a million years mean to take the life of a innocent person. im not saying justice shouldnt be served cuz it surely will be but an innocent life was taken by a person in need of help. prayers to the victims family and kaylas family.

Nothing like some compassion for the victim. If she gets off on any charges at all it’s going to be a real shame. She deserves to be institutionalized for life. There’s no value to saving her sorry butt.
