A vegetable company is recalling romaine lettuce because of a potential E. coli outbreak. This is it, the Mayans were right, that 2012 movie starring John Cusack was right, Ms. Cleo was right, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, etc.

Freshway Foods, based out of Sidney, Ohio, is recalling the leafy veggie after 19 people had gotten sick, 12 of them in hospitals and three with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a life-threatening condition capable of causing brain or kidney bleeding. The recall only affects Romaine lettuce sold under the Freshway and Imperial Sysco brands.

The Food and Drug Administration believes the tainted lettuce was grown in Arizona. College students at Ohio State, Daeman College and the University of Michigan were also feeling the common effects of E. coli, which include not-so-bad side-effects like diarrhea as well as “Call the doctor!”-type ones like kidney damage.
Worried if the head of lettuce sitting in your refrigerator is a murderer in hiding? The dangerous greens have a “best if used by” date up to and including May 12. Freshway’s recall also encompasses salads sold at grocery stores which include Marsh, Ingles Markets, Kroger and Giant Eagle.
