Huge Tax Error Costs Suffolk County Sales Tax Revenue

Long Island officials say a mammoth error in a single state tax return is costing Suffolk County $5 million in sales tax revenue.

County budget officials said the taxpayer listed that $10 million in sales tax was owed on out-of-state Internet purchases.

The county’s chief budget aide, Connie Corso, said the taxpayer had meant to write $1,000.

County budget aides say the $10 million figure should have raised a red flag because the taxpayer would have had to spend $116 million in purchases.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance said it could not immediately comment on how the mistake was overlooked and how it was discovered.

The error reduced first-quarter tax receipts by nearly half.

Not to worry, the government will simply find another way to steal this unrealized revenue from you.

How does it “cost” Suffolk County money that wasn’t theirs in the first place?

  3. Balto says:

The civil servant number crunchers are certainly on the ball. A hundred million in on-line purchases from a single hosehold is maybe something that might have been caught by somebody. But no, it’s against union policy to have somebody competent in most jobs.

  4. crankypaul says:

How comforting to know that our county brainiacs are on the ball in their do-nothing jobs. Public welfare would produce a higher rate of return.

AND these losers get pensions and medical perks.

They all need to work in the private sector for 10 years even before they get their county cushions. it might give them a better appreciation of their responsibilities.
