2 Charged With BWI After 1 Boat Capsized


Two people were arrested for boating while intoxicated after the boats they were operating crashed into each other, causing one of the boats to capsize and sending five people overboard into the Great South Bay in Amityville early Saturday, Suffolk County police said.

Katherine Martin was operating a 17-foot Boston Whaler when she crashed with an 18-foot Larson Bow Rider operated by Eric Meyer at 12:15 a.m., police said.  The Boston Whaler capsized and sent all five people on board into the water.

Martin, 28, of Lindenhurst, and one of her passengers, 30-year-old Vincent Meyer, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.  Martin injured her jaw, ribs and clavicle while Meyer was treated for broken ribs.

Marine Bureau officers determined the occupants of both boats were together since 6 p.m. at a bar in Amityville, police said. Both vessels were towed and impounded.

Martin and Eric Meyer, 29, of Amityville, were charged with boating while intoxicated.  Martin was issued a summons and will be arraigned upon release from the hospital.
