Franklin, Rice team up for Philly musical benefit
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Aretha Franklin will take the stage next month with an accomplished accompanist more famous for diplomacy: Condoleezza Rice. The pair will play at Philadelphia’s Mann Center for the Performing Arts on July 27 in show that will feature Franklin’s music and classical composers.
Feds seize movie piracy websites in sweeping raid
LOS ANGELES (AP) — U.S. officials have announced a major crackdown on movie piracy that involved seizing several websites that were offering downloads of pirated movies just hours after they appeared in theaters. In a move announced Wednesday, officials also seized assets from more than a dozen bank, investment and advertising accounts, and executed residential search warrants in several states.
‘Eclipse’ howls past midnight record with $30M
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Twilight Saga” has rung up another record midnight hour. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” took in more than $30 million from midnight screenings Wednesday, according to distributor Summit Entertainment. That surpassed the previous midnight record of $26.3 million set on opening day last November by its predecessor, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” The huge start for “Eclipse” puts the latest chapter in the vampire-romance series on track for one of the biggest opening days ever.
Randall Cunningham’s son dies in hot tub accident
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The 2-year-old son of former NFL star quarterback Randall Cunningham has died in what authorities on Wednesday called an apparent backyard hot tub accident. The Clark County coroner’s office identified the child as Christian Cunningham, and said the cause of death was pending.
Senate chairman starts probe of Transocean’s taxes
WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee is launching an investigation into the tax practices of Transocean Ltd., owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, leading to the massive oil spill. The company moved its headquarters to landlocked Switzerland two years ago, where it paid a 16 percent tax on its $4.4 billion global operating income last year. Before that, the company had been located in the Cayman Islands, another tax haven.
