Spike Lee screens film that includes oil spill
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Spike Lee screened some of his new HBO documentary that includes a look at the massive BP Gulf oil spill and says no one from the oil giant is speaking to him. The director showed about 90 minutes of “If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise” at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in San Diego on Saturday. The film is a follow-up to “When the Levees Broke” about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina
Malaysia TV completes quest for Muslim role model
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — An Islamic reality TV show that made its contestants counsel promiscuous teenagers and bury corpses has named a 26-year-old mosque prayer leader as Malaysia’s top role model for young Muslims. Producers voiced hopes Sunday of launching similar versions of “Imam Muda,” or “Young Leader,” in other Muslim-majority countries after the Malaysian show’s first season became the most-watched program to ever air on pay-television network Astro’s Islamic channel.

Coast Guard allows toxic chemical use on Gulf oil
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has routinely approved BP requests to use thousands of gallons of toxic chemical a day to break up oil slicks in the Gulf of Mexico despite a federal directive that the chemicals be used only rarely on surface waters, congressional investigators said Saturday after examining BP and government documents. The documents show the Coast Guard approved 74 waivers over a 48-day period after the restrictions were imposed, resulting in hundreds of thousands of gallons of the chemicals to be spread on Gulf waters.
