The Long Island heat wave continues, and shows no signs of getting any more bearable. According the National Weather Service, Tuesday was record breaking, as it was the third hottest day in Islip at 100 degrees. New York City hit 103 degrees, and more than 1,300 homes lost power, mostly in North Hempstead, Hempstead and Huntington townships.
Wednesday is expected to be no better. A heat advisory and an air quality alert are in effect again from the National Weather Service. The heat advisory is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the air quality alert is from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s, but the heat index will range from 100 to 104 degrees.

Thursday will be cooler with a high of 86 degrees, meaning that the heat wave is almost over.
Officials advise residents to stay in an air condition room, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, limit physical exertion, stay out of the sun and check up on elderly relatives and neighbors.
Many towns have opened up cooling centers or extended pool hours in wake of the heat wave. Riverhead Town has opened the Aquebogue Senior Center at 60 Sahde Tree Lane in Aquebogue from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Suffolk has set up a cooling station at a senior citizen center at 16 2nd Ave. in Brentwood, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Water, juices and snacks are offered to anyone who would like to come into this air-conditioned center.
Southampton Town is opening the Hampton Bays Senior Center on Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays until 9 p.m. For town residents who do not have available transportation, the Hampton Bays Senior Center staff can be contacted at 631-728-1235 for shuttle service. Those who are able to provide their own transportation are requested to do so.
The Town of Islip has extended bay beach hours until 7 p.m. and ocean beach hours until 6 p.m. In addtion, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Bay Shore spray park, which opened last week. The park is located at the Bay Shore Marina on South Clinton Avenue.
Town of Brookhaven officials extended the hours at the Centereach and Holtsville pools as well as Cedar Beach, West Meadow Beach, Davis Park Beach and Corey Beach until 7:45 p.m.
In the Town of Huntington, Crab Meadow Beach, Centerport Beach, West Neck Beach and the Dix Hills pool will all be open until 8 p.m.
Nassau County officials are opening cooling centers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at North Massapequa Community Center, 214 N. Albany Ave., North Massapequa and Sandell Senior Center, 50 South Park Ave., Rockville Centre.
In the Town of Oyster Bay the athletic fields will be closed from noon until 6 p.m. due to the high heat index. The afternoon summer recreation program is also suspended. Pools will remain open until 10 p.m., the beaches will be open til dusk, and the cooling centers are at the Glen Head Community Center, 200 Glen Head Road and William P. Bennet Hicksville Community Center, 28 Carl Street Hicksville.
The Town of Hempstead has open 13 cooling centers and has extended the hours of operation at 13 pools. The cooling centers will be open Thursday as well, and are operating between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The Merrick Senior will be open until 6:00 p.m. They are:
