The fishing season for black sea bass has been extended so that fisherman will now be able to catch black sea bass until the end of the year.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrator (NOAA) announced the decision Thursday to add an additional 90 days to the previous season, which usually lasts two months. The season will now run from May 22 to Oct. 11, with an additional window from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. The size and bag limit will be 12-1/2 inches and 25 fish per person.

Black sea bass fishing is very popular among Long Island’s recreational fisherman once the summer flounder season ends. The extension is expected to be a huge boon to the struggling recreational fishing and charter boat industries.
Restrictions on the sea bass season were imposed based on flawed catch data from 2009. An investigation of more recent data revealed that the amount of sea bass catches were not as high as had been thought.
