Cablevision Says Optimum Online Webmail Restored

SUNDAY UPDATE: Some still without E-mail service after four days

UPDATE: SUNDAY, JULY 17, 7:30 A.M.: Some Optimum Online customers who still had no webmail access on Saturday say they called Cablevision and had their passwords reset. They are now receiving E-mails.

Cablevision announced Friday afternoon that it’s Optimum Online Webmail service has been restored after being down for more than 24 hours. But, as of Saturday, many in Nassau and Suffolk Counties say they are still without service, and still haven’t received all of their backed up E-mails. It has now been more than 48 hours the service has been down.

“The email disruption has been resolved,” says Sarah Chaikin, Director of Media Relations for Cablevision. “The issue was caused by a digital mail storage device malfunction.  We believe that this was an extremely rare, one-time problem after more than a decade of uninterrupted email service and that no customer email was lost. We apologize to our customers and thank them for their patience.”

Cablevision says that no customer Internet access was affected, nor were any non-Cablevision email services (such as Yahoo and Gmail), and that the interruption “impacted a minority of customers throughout the Cablevision service area.”

“The utmost care was taken to restore service as quickly as possible while ensuring that no emails were lost, says Chaikin.

Customers across Long Island, New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania who tried to log on to their E-mail  between Thursday morning and Friday afternoon were getting a prompt asking for their password. After the password was entered, an error message read, “Secure Connection Failed.”

Sunday AM – Cablevision tried telling me it ‘must be my router or a an issue with my Microsoft Outlook, possibly a corrupted software issue’

I started to laugh at this tech when he told me… after being on hold for almost 40 minutes…. and then telling him that ‘I am being asked for my password’… and him telling me that this issue isn’t a problem on their end… I was like ‘dude, so its just a coincidence that LongIslandPress.com has a story up with reports from them and commenters that everyone is being asked for their password’.

Long story short… cablevision changed servers during this mess… and now if your outlook is set up so your incoming is pop.optonline.net and your outgoing is mail.optonline.net — then you need to change the pop.optonline.net to mail.optonline.net

We found this out after I gave the tech permission to access my machine… he found the problem quickly and said ‘we haven’t used that in a very long time’.. I responded ‘and you just changed servers so now the new server is requesting the mail. vs the way it was pop.’… and of course the tech had to come back and say ‘someone on your end must have changed your settings’…..

I was taken back but not surprised…. this guy couldn’t just accept the fact that he found another issue which is affecting its customers… just to stupid to realize that a simple update on the new server was affecting me and who knows how many others.

Funny how on Cablevisions News 12 top of the hour news update yestereday there was no mention of this crisis.

Overall, Pretty pathetic in my book.

Wow, this is why I got Dolan’s money sucking black hose out of my house the moment FiOS became available. WORST customer service I have ever experienced anywhere in my life!

I am really tired if the propaganda line promulgated by Cablevision’s P.R. Department, as I have not received about 100 news and science subscriptions as of Saturday 6:11PM, and will never know, whether I will ever receive them. Equipment fails, software disintegrates, human mistakes occur, breakdowns happen, and I truly understand this problem within I.T., but please don’t mislead the public that all is well when it is quite frankly, not well. Honesty is the best policy, and a public is more forgiving when you tell the truth. In so far as trying to call Cablevision to determine the status of my account, and missing mail, I have spent hours on the phone, waiting for a response, while listening to pre-recorded messages of services offered, and that is a an insult and disgrace.

Optimun Webmail is not restored as of Saturday, at least with regard to my account, and communication is with Internet Repair services is impossible; they could have sent a general communique to those affected, in good faith, to save so much time on the phones waiting for a ” no response “. I like Cablevision, I like their services, customer repairs, and understand the devastating nature of encountering a major problem…we learn from such problems. Just be honest, and forthright, and I would have been understanding and patient ! Thank you.

Optimum Webmail not restored as of 7/17 16:30 Saturday–no change from Friday. Called but could not get through. How can Cablevision say issue is resolved. Prior emails from April 18th onwards are gone. No other email coming through. My two email accounts have different issues–one lost prior emails and the other has email date header problems. Rep told me (yesterday) not sure if prior emails will be restored or not, or would be lost. Cablevision should be forthright about the issues, and not cover up and mislead as to size of problem. Customers need to know and have the right to know so that they can made alternative arrangements. Think of customers first, please!.

  10. Chien says:

Optimum should not mislead the public–it is not good public relations policy. Honesty is the best policy–keep that in mind, powers at be at Cablevision/Optimum.

Toyota Chairman apologizes, Cablevision Chairman is mum but certain users got $2 credit–ha ha–a bandaid for your wounds–why not $5, or even $10, or $15?

Guess it is $1 per day, although we pay more than that per day. Guess they want us to buy Lottery with that dollar.

The power of monopoly–what Cablevision needs is more competition in its markets, then it will be more customer oriented.

  11. Chien says:

Optimum Webmail not restored as of Saturday, July 17 16:00 in Connecticut. How can Cablevision make the announcement that outage is restored–it is misleading the public–and not honest. Only new emails get through, all old emails from April 18th onward are gone on one of my accounts. No emails from past few days are there either. I get a lot of emails everyday, but none today. I sent two test emails using Yahoo mail and they were received, but that is it..
