The Coast Guard says it began a search-and-rescue effort after getting a “Mayday” call from the fishing vessel, the 72-foot-long Atlantic Queen, at about 3:30 a.m. Friday.

It collided with a bulk carrier cargo ship in excess of 600 feet long that had just left New York. The Coast Guard later identified that vessel as the Baldor, registered in the Marshall Islands.

Coast Guard investigators were sent to the scene.
