Police: Father Hid Heroin Near Children in Car


A Medford man was arrested after he was seen trying to hide heroin and a hypodermic needle near his two children in the backseat of his car, Suffolk County police said.

Richard Neumann, 26, was driving eastbound on Montauk Highway in Patchogue at 9 a.m. when he was pulled over. As the officer approached the car, he witnessed Neumann trying to hide something near the car seats of his twin 18-month-old son and daughter, police said. The items were later found to be heroin and a hypodermic needle, police said.

Neumann was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of a control substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, criminal possession of stolen property and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Suffolk County Child Protective Services was notified and the children were released into the mother’s custody.

Neumann will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip .
