Mastic Man Rescued from House Fire

A man was rescued from a Mastic house fire on Saturday afternoon.

Suffolk County police officers and Mastic Fire Department firefighters responded to a 911 call of a man trapped in a burning house on Meadowmere Avenue at 5:30 p.m. Officers, firefighters and neighbors used ladders to rescue Christopher Murphy from the first floor, police said.

The 48-year-old was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was in stable condition. His 47-year-old wife, Janet Murphy, and son, Sean Murphy, 14, were treated for smoke inhalation along with several firefighters, officers and neighbors.

Firefighters extinguished the flames. Arson Squad detectives determined that the fire originated in a basement bedroom and was accidental in nature, caused by the failure of a box fan in the room.
