Three weeks after a Long Island animal shelter received 120 dogs that were rescued from inhumane conditions at commercial breeding operations known as puppy mills, the same shelter will receive another 70 dogs from similar situations.
North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington is taking in the dogs following a plea from National Mill Dog Rescue, which saved the dogs after an Arkansas puppy mill was shut down.
Once they arrive at the shelter, the dogs and puppies will be evaluated medically, behaviorally and socially. They will then be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
