A 41-year-old man was attacked with his own hammer while walking down the street in Valley Stream on Tuesday night, Nassau County police said.
The victim was walking near the Staples store on Sunrise Highway when a man charged at him, knocking him to the ground at 10:05 p.m., police said.
A tool bag the victim was carrying spilled its contents when the assailant “grabbed a hammer and struck the victim repeatedly about the face and head,” police said in a statement.

The attacker fled on foot northbound across Sunrise Highway onto South Franklin Avenue. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, which included a three inch laceration to the back of the head.
