1 Killed, 3 Wounded in Huntington Station Shooting

A gunman opened fire on a group of four people in Huntington Station, killing a 25-year-old man and injuring the three others Tuesday night, Suffolk County police said.

Russell Peterman was talking with three other men on the front stoop of a Railroad Street home when the suspect walked up and began shooting at 10:55 p.m., police said.

Peterman, whose address was not immediately known, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was shot in the abdomen and the other two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting.

This is the fourth fatal shooting in the one-square-mile hamlet so far this year, only one of which has resulted in an arrest. In addition, four people have been shot and wounded in the neighborhood, resulting in two arrests. Gunmen also fired bullets into a house in the area in February.

The violence prompted school officials to close a nearby elementary school out of fear for the students’ safety. Lawmakers are considering installing Shot Spotter, a gunshot detection device, to help police respond faster to shootings in the neighborhood.

Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 631-852-6392 or anonymously Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
