Montgomerie says Westwood’s plea changed his mind
NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — Europe captain Colin Montgomerie has admitted to a late change of heart over who would hit his team’s opening drive in the Ryder Cup. Montgomerie’s initial choice to go out first in the opening fourball series Friday had been Northern Irish pair Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy. But after an impassioned plea from Lee Westwood, the captain said Thursday he “decided to give him that honor.” “Saying that Rory and Graeme would go out first was not a red herring,” Montgomerie said.
Italy’s Unicredit taps Ghizzoni as CEO
ROME (AP) — Unicredit SpA named its No. 2 Federico Ghizzoni as chief executive on Thursday to replace Alessandro Profumo, ousted in a politicized battle sparked by Libya’s increased share in Italy’s biggest bank. Ghizzoni, 54, had been one of four deputy chief executives under Profumo, responsible for the bank’s operations in central and eastern Europe
Protesting police throw Ecuador into chaos
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — The government declared a state of siege Thursday after rebellious police angered by a law that cuts their benefits plunged this small South American nation into chaos, roughing up the president, shutting down airports and blocking highways in a nationwide strike. Incensed officers shoved President Rafael Correa around and pelted him with tear gas and water when he tried to speak at a police barracks in the capital.
Stand-up comedian Greg Giraldo dies at 44
NEW YORK (AP) — Greg Giraldo, a stand-up comedian who specialized in rants and insult-filled roasts, has died. He was 44. Giraldo died at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., after being hospitalized days earlier
Interior Dept. sets new offshore drilling rules
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration on Thursday announced new rules requiring that offshore drilling rigs certify they have working blowout preventers and standards for cementing wells. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the new rules will improve safety and reduce the chance of catastrophic blowouts such as the massive BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He said the rules also should improve workplace safety by reducing the risk of human error.
