Elizabeth Smart is ready for a new chapter in her life. One that includes a wedding gown and all the festivities that comes with getting married.
Smart, 24, whose story gripped the nation when she was kidnapped from her home in the middle of the night in 2002, is engaged, her father, Ed Smart, told People magazine.
“We’re very excited for her,” he told the magazine. “She told us at home last Saturday. I wasn’t really surprised. They’ve been very happy together. We’re just thrilled. We’re looking forward to her moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life.”
Smart’s life has played out in front of America since she returned home to her family after she was held captive by a street preacher for nine months.
Her father didn’t reveal any details about the wedding and did not want to reveal the groom’s name because his daughter wants to keep the plans private, he said.
But it didn’t take long for some details to hit the public.
The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that Smart and the groom-to-be are to be married in the summer. It was also reported that the couple have wedding registries at Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn for a July 1 wedding. The registries read the names: Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour.
A rep for Smart didn’t confirm the July 1 wedding date, but said they’re still planning the wedding.
“She’s going to be very public in her child advocacy work,” he told the magazine, “but has decided she wants to keep her personal life private.”
