Delphi buys back ownership stakes from GM and US

DETROIT (AP) — Auto parts supplier Delphi Automotive LLP said Thursday it is buying back ownership stakes from General Motors Co. and the federal government for $4.4 billion, a move that strengthens the company’s balance sheet ahead of a potential public offering.



Time Warner Cable drops channels from iPad app

WASHINGTON (AP) — Time Warner Cable Inc. will drop a dozen cable channels from its iPad app after three big programmers complained that the company does not have the rights to distribute their content on the popular tablet computer.

Lucille Lortel Award nominations announced

NEW YORK (AP) — The plays “Other Desert Cities” and “This Wide Night” have each received a leading five Lucille Lortel Award nominations in honor of the best of off-Broadway. Other shows that captured multiple nominations Thursday by the Off-Broadway League include “Gatz,” “In the Wake,” “In Transit,” “The Coward” and “Peter and the Starcatcher.” Joe Mantello will be competing against himself in the directing category, having been nominated for both “The Other Place” and “Other Desert Cities.” Laurie Metcalf and Edie Falco will face off in the best actress category, while Andre Braugher and Christian Borle compete for leading actor. Manhattan Theater Club head Lynne Meadow will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.



Selig says MLB wants to ban smokeless tobacco

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Commissioner Bud Selig says Major League Baseball wants to ban smokeless tobacco in the majors. In a letter to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Selig told the group’s president that he believes “smokeless tobacco should be banned at the Major League level.” In order to make that happen, the owners have to negotiate with the players’ union and have the ban added to the next collective bargaining agreement. Smokeless tobacco, including dip and chew, is banned in minor league ballparks.



GOP trying to use tax law to limit abortions

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House panel voted Thursday to limit tax breaks for insurance policies that cover abortions as House Republicans try to chip away at President Barack Obama’s health overhaul. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 22-14 on a party-line vote to pass the bill, which would prevent people from deducting the cost of an abortion from their taxable income. The bill also would prevent small businesses and taxpayers from using tax credits in the new health care law to provide or pay for insurance policies that cover the procedure
