Early results show Anker with 51 percent of the vote versus 48 percent for Haley, who held the same seat between 1996 and 2003.

Suffolk County elections officials said there was a 12 percent turnout, but there are at least 259 absentee ballotshave yet to be counted.

It was not clear when the results would be certified.

Haley has campaigned on his experience in business and finance while Anker touts her credentials as an environmental advocate who offers a fresh perspective.

The winner will fill a vacant seat left by Daniel Losquadro (R-Shoreham), who was elected to the state Assembly last fall.
