Cops: DWI Suspect Sped 126 mph on LIE


An alleged drunken driver was arrested after officers caught him speeding at more than 100 mph on the Long Island Expressway early Sunday morning, Nassau County police said.

Highway Patrol officers clocked a westbound Mitsubishi Evolution speeding at 122 mph between exits 46 and 44 and at 126 mph near exit 41 in North Hills at 12:30 a.m., police said.

The driver, 26-year-old Joseph Melendez of Central Islip, was eventually stopped at exit 34.

“During the process of following and bringing Melendez to a stop, other motorists on the road were observed being forced to take evasive action in order to avoid becoming involved in a collision,” police said in a statement.

Melendez was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and 10 traffic violations.

His bail was set at$15,000 bond or $7,000 cash following his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
